Mitchell County Commissioners Meeting Monday November 17th

County Commissioners Meeting

November 17, 2014

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular meeting Monday morning, November seventeenth. Commissioners Jim Marshall, Tom Claussen, and Mike Cooper were present as well as County Clerk Chris Treaster.

The Commissioners had a light agenda before them and dealt with the items in a business-like fashion. The meeting opened with a wide-ranging discussion about the Kansas Association of Counties state convention they attended last week. The three commissioners, the county clerk and Economic Development Specialist Heather Hartman attended numerous seminar sessions during the course of the convention. Everyone felt they gained considerable knowledge and that the convention was worth their time and money.

The Commissioners voted to accept the settlement from KCAMP insurance for damage caused in the hail storm. They received a payment of two hundred fifty-two thousand, two hundred forty-four dollars and seventeen cents to repair damage done to Mitchell County property. The total is subject to change should unknown damage and expenses become known.

The Commissioners conducted a work session for about one hour. They resumed their regular meeting to meet with John Denny, longtime auditor for Mitchell County. Denny represents the accounting firm of Lindberg, Vogel, Pierce, Farris and Company, Chartered. Denny is planning to retire on December thirty-first of this year. He has served as the auditor for Mitchell County for the past forty-three years. He believes their accounting firm has served Mitchell County for over fifty years.

Accompanying Denny was Randy Hoffmeier and Jeff Reece, both partners in the firm. Hoffmeier has been in the accounting field for twenty-seven years and will replace Denny as the county’s auditor. Having worked on many budgets with numerous counties he is looking forward to adding Mitchell County to his caseload. He has eight counties to oversee and that is a full time load.

With all the business of the County taken care of, the Commissioners adjourned their meeting.
