A jury of 12 Lincoln County residents needed about three hours to unanimously agree on the verdict of Guilty of Unintentional Second Degree Murder, a severity level 2, person felony, in the matter of the State of Kansas vs. Scott Weigel. The offense carries a sentence of 9months -41 years. A sentencing hearing is to take place January 12 at 9:30 a.m.
The trial wrapped up a day earlier than expected, Thursday afternoon November 20.
Weigel, 34, was charged with Second Degree Murder in the September 9, 2013 shooting death of Keith Ancell, 21.
Lincoln County Clerk of the District Court, Jo Hachmeister, read the verdict after receiving it from the jury.
"Guilty of unintentionally, but recklessly, killing Keith Ancell under circumstances that show extreme indifference to the value of human life," Hachmeister read.
At the direction of the judge, members of both families held their emotions in check as the verdict was delivered.
The jury was released to deliberations at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning and returned to the courtroom with the verdict at 1:30 p.m.
Closing arguments began just after 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
Reaction
Following the verdict, Lincoln County Attorney Jennifer O'Hare was pleased with the outcome.
"This was a very emotional case for all involved and we are very appreciative that the jury was able to do its job," O'Hare said. "We hope that the Ancell family can finally have some closure and we believe that the verdict was appropriate."
