Helen Watts, Age 88

Helen Elizabeth Watts passed away on March 1, 2015 at the age of 88. Helen or Blondie as many of her friends and family called her was born May 22, 1926 to Dr. Victor and Eva Watts. Helen was the youngest of six children, born in Smith County. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. Helen attended grade school and high school in Smith Center where she developed many lifelong friendships. After graduating high school, Helen was employed by Southwestern bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. This lasted nearly two decades but with the advancing of technology there was no longer the need for switchboard operators and her job with the company was terminated. Helen chose to stay in Smith Center and care for her aging father and took a job with James Fetters at the Smith County Attorney's Office. She worked there until her retirement.
In her younger years Helen was very active and loved a multitude of sports. Helen played on a women's softball team, loved golfing, bowling, tennis, skating, and boating. Most of all she loved her family and traveling. Helen made many trips to Nevada and California to visit her brothers and sister and spent time with her nephews and niece. They were a big part of her life. With her quick wit and sense of humor, there was rarely a dull moment with her around.
Later in life Helen developed a strong friendship with Patricia (Pat) Frank. They eventually decided to give up their apartments and purchased a home together. They lived there for many years until Pat passed away. Pat's family became like a second family to Helen. Greg & Tammy Frank provided much love and support for her.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Victor and Eva Watts; sister's, Goldie Watts, Gretchen Tuggle, Irene McNerney; brothers, Forrest and W. Paul Watts; nephew Timothy Watts; niece, Vicky Sue. Left to cherish her memory is Ann O'Connor and family, Paul Watts and family, Steven & Jennifer Tuggle and family, Mike Watts and family, Allen & Marlene McNerney and family and Randy Watts.
