Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week, May 2-9

Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a rare genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or no apparent cause. The best estimate suggests that as few as 20,000 Americans are affected by O.I.

There is no cure for O.I.; however , treatments are directed toward maximizing independent mobility, developing optimal bone mass and muscle strength. Use of wheelchairs and other mobility aides are common, particularly among people with more severe forms of the disease.

There are varying degrees of O.I., ranging from those having just a few breaks to those who have several hundred in their lifetime.

Despite numerous fractures and other restrictions, people with O.I. lead productive and meaningful lives. They attend school, develop friendships and relationships, have successful careers, and are active members of their communities.

Beloit native, Colton Pearson, was born with O.I. Colton has a bright, inquisitive spirit. He is curious and talkative, just as all 4 year olds are! The week of May 2 - 9 is designated as Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week. Colton and his family are ambassadors for the O.I. Foundation. Please feel free to ask questions so you can learn more about O.I. For more information, or to make a donation, please contact the organization at www.oif.org.
