The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular weekly meeting at the Courthouse on Monday, May 4th to oversee the smooth operation of the County. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present. Chris Treaster, County Clerk, announced she would be gone from Tuesday through Friday to attend the yearly County Clerks and Election Officials State Convention.

Kelly Hawk, Emergency Medical Service director, appeared before the commissioners and requested a ten minute executive session for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel. When the regular meeting resumed it was announced no action would be taken as a result of the closed session.

Larry Emerson, Public Works Superintendent, was on hand to discuss the Cawker City Causeway project with the Commissioners. Various options for the project were considered such as: width of the road, number of parking spaces, type of guardrail, and what, if any, work could be done by county crews to reduce the cost. Because of the number of unknown variables, all agreed it would be best if they could get the government project manager to come to Mitchell County and walk through the project, the options, and the cost.

Emerson informed the Commissioners that he had located a company in Texas that manufactured round guard rail posts at a more competitive price than others he had found. The cost of these treated posts was $26 per post. A minimum order of 72 posts was required. Emerson assured the Commissioners they would easily need that many to repair those that have rotted out at ground level.

Emerson alerted the Commissioners about a problem at the Recycling Building at the Fair Grounds. At least one of the urinals or stools in the restrooms in the Building have been running constantly for quite some time. “We are going to have one heckuva water bill out there,” said Emerson.

It appears that when the building is used, the restrooms are also used. Due to faulty plumbing, the stools or the urinals do not shut off correctly and keep running after everyone has left. This problem has been an ongoing problem.

The Recycling Building was built as a joint venture between the County and OCCK. They explored the feasibility of turning over ownership of the building to OCCK because they use it the most. Chairman Tom Claussen said, “We need to talk with Barb Wise and see if there is any interest.”

At 9:30 a.m., the Commissioner officially opened the Public Hearing for the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. Melinda Latham, County Appraiser, was on hand but she said she was attending “just to watch.” No one appeared at the hearing to express opinions for or against the program. After the appropriate amount of time had passed, the Commissioners voted to approve the new Neighborhood Revitalization Program as presented.

Having addressed all the items on the agenda in a successful fashion, the meeting was adjourned.
