Sister Miriam Vaughan, Age 86

Sister Miriam Vaughan died July 25, 2015, at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia, KS. She was 86 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 67 years. She was born in Oklahoma City, OK, on March 29, 1929, to Harold and Louise Knaup Vaughan, the third of six children, and was baptized Martha Lou. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on February 2, 1948. On August 14, 1948, Martha Lou received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Miriam Edward. She pronounced first vows on August 15, 1949, and final vows on August 15, 1952.

Sister Miriam received a B.A. diploma in psychology in 1958 from Marymount College. In 1960 and 1967 she received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees respectively from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. In 1967 Sister Miriam returned to Marymount College as Chairperson of the Department of Psychology and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. In 1973 Sister Miriam was appointed a Professor of Psychology. In 1980 Sister Miriam, along with her twin, Sister Louise Marie, accepted an appointment by the Bishop of the Salina Diocese to become advocates for the Salina Diocesan Marriage Tribunal. Sister Miriam served in this capacity until her retirement in 1995. In 1992 she moved to the Motherhouse in Concordia; then in 2011 she moved to Mount Joseph Senior Community.

Sister Miriam was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters. She is survived by one brother, James from Springfield, MO; and sister, Dorothy Otott of The Village, FL. A Bible Vigil Service will be held July 28, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Janet Lander as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be July 29, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Rev. James Hoover presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
