The Silver Ring Thing is Coming to Beloit

George Orwell, the noted English novelist wrote, “In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” That observation is as true today as it was in the 1940s when Orwell penned that quote. Our world today appears to celebrate and encourage immorality, exploitation and corruption. Those who hold fast to decency and purity are often looked upon as misfits and outsiders. Contemporary movies, music, clothing styles, and accepted rules of behavior tend to bear witness to these facts.

The Silver Ring Thing is a virginity pledge program created in 1995 by a youth minister in Arizona. The goal was to develop a way to combat the dramatically rising rates of sexually-transmitted diseases and the escalating number of pregnancies amongst teenagers. The founders also wanted to protect teenagers from the ever-increasing tolerance of permissive and indulgent sexual activity in our society.

Renee Mason, local event coordinator had these comments about the upcoming event, “I think it is very important for our kids to make good choices but there is so much social pressure to “go along with the crowd.” The Silver Ring Thing gives kids a chance to look at the other side of the issues. We hope it reinforces messages the parents have been giving to their kids. No, everyone is not doing it. No, it is not just fun and games, and Yes, there are very real and powerful consequences.”

The Silver Ring Thing is a high energy presentation of music, videos, skits and special effects and it is coming to Beloit this weekend. The Silver Ring Thing will take place at the Beloit Jr. Sr. High School on Sunday evening, November 8 from 6 – 8 p.m. The theme for this year’s Silver Ring Thing tour is “Uprising: Disrupting Common Culture.” The intent is to refute the myth of today’s culture that promotes the “meet-up, hook-up, break-up” way of life and instead to inspire teens to accept a pure life centered on a relationship with Jesus Christ.

This potentially life changing event is free to all who wish to participate. At the conclusion of this fast paced experience participants will have an opportunity to make an open commitment to purity and will be able to purchase a SRT ring to wear as a symbol and reminder of their decision. While the event is free, the cost of the silver ring is $20.00. The purchase of a ring is not required to participate in the program.

It is one thing to make a vow at the end of a dynamic, stimulating program and it is another thing entirely to hold true to that vow. Ernest Hemingway observed this frailty of human nature when he commented, “It is awfully easy to be hard boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night, it is another thing.”

Working with this observation on human nature, a parent session is held at each event to educate parents about the negative influences in today’s culture and how parents can encourage and support their teen’s commitment.
