MONDAY JULY 18 MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MEETING

Mitchell County Commissioners

Monday July 18, 2016

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their weekly business meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning, July 18. All Commissioners were present as well as the County Clerk.

Nicole Clain, representing the North Central Kansas Planning Commission, was present to discuss a variance issue that is pending regarding a handicapped accessibility application. The State does not allow the rewarding of grants to property located in the flood plain. After due consideration the Commissioner voted 3-0 to disallow the awarding of any grants in the flood plain.

The Commissioners appointed Jarrod Miller to be the Logan Township Trustee.

Public Works supervisor, Larry Emerson, told the Commissioners that the new trailer has been delivered and it will be put into service as soon as possible.

Casey Frasier of Foley Equipment, was present to discuss the advisability of purchasing state of Kansas surplus motor graders. The Commissioners had reason to believe purchasing a motor grader in this manner would be money saving action.

Information provided by Frasier shed a different light on the matter. While it is true the used machine could be purchased for 20-30 thousand dollars less than a new motor grader, the used machines come with no warranty or guaranty. New machines usually have a five to seven year warranty. The Commissioners believe that while the used machines are cheaper, the lack of a warranty could cause very high expenditures.

Emerson also reported the overlaying of the Causeway blacktop is getting underway.

The first round of mowing has been completed.

Curt Frailer told the Commissioners that the refinancing of the hospital bonds will result in a savings of over $210,000.

Having successfully addressed all the items on the agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
