The Beloit City Council gathered for a special meeting at five o’clock p.m. on Monday, August 29th. The purpose of the meeting was Resolution 2016 calling of a Special Question Election for the purpose of submitting to the qualified electors of the city the proposition of abandoning the Mayor-Council form of government.
According to information provided by Chris Treaster, Mitchell County Clerk: The City of Beloit currently has a mayor-council form of government with a mayor elected at large and eight council members – two from each of the City’s four wards. The City of Beloit currently has a City Administrator, appointed by the Council, with the duties specified by ordinance.
Passage of the proposition on the ballot, would change the form of government to a two ward division of the City of Beloit with three councilors being elected from each ward. The mayor would be elected at-large by a vote of all electors of the City.
The City Council voted to have this question to be placed on the ballot for consideration by the voters in the November 8, 2016 general election.
The Council made it clear that ample efforts would be made to educate the voting public about the pros and cons of making such a change in the makeup of the governance of the City.
