TUESDAY SEPT 6TH MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MEETING

Mitchell County Commissioners

Tuesday, September 6th, 2016

By Terry Bailey

The first order of business of the weekly Mitchell County Commissions meeting was a presentation by Jeff Robert, Information Technology Specialist, concerning storage of data from cameras located at the Law Enforcement Center and the Courthouse. Camera data is very memory intensive and finding a way to store it correctly, safely, and at an affordable cost has been a challenge. Keeping the surveillance video is particularly critical because such video could be used in a trial to prove someone’s guilt or innocence.

Recently the Commissioners heard a presentation by Nextech regarding their suggested storage system. This came with a price tag in the neighborhood of $23,000. The system presented to the Commissioners by Roberg would cost about $5,000. Roberg’s system uses the Drobo system of stacking hard drives in a tower arrangement which, in turn, becomes part of the File Safe system. This arrangement has been in use with some companies for the past eight years. The Commissioners asked Roberg to construct a proposal with specific capabilities and costs so they might act upon it.

Terry Bailey, one of the two Mitchell County representatives on the Pawnee Mental Health Board of Directors presented a Proclamation from Pawnee Mental Health to declare September as “Recovery” month in Mitchell County. Bailey pointed out that life is a series of steps forward and sometimes steps backward. The key to a successful life it to deal with challenges as they occur, take steps to recover, and then continue to move forward. The Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt September as Recovery month in Mitchell County.

Larry Emerson, Public Works Superintendent, presented contracts to the Commissioners for the inspection of two bridges as required by law. The Commissioners voted to approve the funds for the Causeway and the Fisherman’s Bridges to be examined.

A discussion about the Recycling Building at the Fairgrounds and the ongoing higher-than-expected utility bills from that building took place. This discussion went the way of similar discussions in the past. These are several possible avenues of action but none seem to be palatable to the Commissioners.

Emerson has checked into costs for signs to be placed in locations where families with children reside. Specialty signs cost $50 and regular signs cost $20.

Larry Sharp, representing the Kansas County Association Midline Pool otherwise known as K-CAMP was present to give the Commissioners his yearly update. K-C AMP is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The organization began with three members and has grown to its current number of 66 counties. The organization has accumulated twenty million dollars in assets.

Mitchell County Sheriff Doug Daugherty and Undersheriff Tony Perez were present for the opening of bids for two new vehicles for the Sheriff’s Department. The only bids received for the new vehicles were submitted by Beloit Auto and Truck Plaza. The department had hoped to buy two new vehicles and trade in two new vehicles. The Commissioners directed Daugherty to develop exact specifications for the new vehicles and try to solicit at least one other bid.

A Neighborhood Revitalization Grant application for Mike Lake of Cawker City was approved. Lake will be building a new storage building with dimensions of 105’x30’x10’.

Tom Claussen was chosen as the County’s voting delegate at the Kansas Association of Counties Convention.
