The Beloit School Board conducted their September meeting at the Board Office on North Independence Avenue on Monday evening September 11th.

Terry Bailey provided the board members with an update on the Little Red Schoolhouse. At one time the Schoolhouse was a well visited landmark attraction in the roadside park. However for the past 40 years or so it had minimal, if any, maintenance or care. It has reached a state of deterioration such that remedial maintenance must be given the building or allow it to rot into the ground. Jerry Boettcher will address the Board at their October meeting.

Darsey Offut gave the Board a rundown on the many activities of the Site Council.

The Student Council president reported to the Board regarding the many back to school activities in which they have been involved. STUCO members had painted a small mural on one of the school’s interior walls. They hope to paint one positive motivational mural each month. With Homecoming fast approaching the Student Council is busy with lots of activities to celebrate the occasion. Beloit High School is hosting one of the Regional STUCO conferences. They expect in excess of 200 participants coming to Beloit High for the event.

Elizabeth Fixsen gave an update on the activities of the Parent
Teacher Organization. She said that Family Fun Night was well attended with a turnout larger than usual. Fixsen said the Pizza Hut has changed hands so she is unsure if the fundraiser normally held there will continue. PTO is working on a new shirt logo.

Karen Niemczyk, Director of the Beloit Special Education Coop, told the Board that she was able to access VI-B funds which she will apply to salaries. She also has completed the new job description for the assistant director. The Board approved the document as presented. She said that almost all staff positions have been filled.

Brady Dean, Assistant Principal of the Elementary School, said the school marathon will again be conducted. Students will run/walk one mile each morning. The Grand Finale will be conducted at the Beloit High track where the students will run their last lap to complete the 26 mile distance. The Beloit Area Concert Association is bringing the Allas Brass Company to Beloit for a concert on Sunday, September 17th. They have agreed to stay until Monday to perform for the Beloit Elementary Students.

Dean then viewed the events at the MCPOC. Dean said evaluators from Wichita State who will review their data from last year. The goals for the MCPC are to increase the number of partnerships, continue to fundraise to meet our cash match requirements, and improve our parent training program. The Family Play and Learn Nights parents will present a multitude of fun and educational play-based learning activities to do at home with their children.

Casey Seyfert, Beloit Jr. Sr High Principal, gave the Board an update of the enrollment numbers. In his building there are 56 seventh graders, 54 8th graders, 57 9th graders, 71 10th graders, 60 11th graders, and 48 12th graders. This totals 346 student down from 358 last year.

Seyfert said tryouts took place the first week of school for the play THE MATCHMAKER. More than 35 students will be involved in the play which will take place on November 9th through November 12th.

Picture day at the Jr. Sr High School will be September 27th.
