The USD School Board conducted their January meeting at the Board Office on North Independence Avenue Monday evening, January 8th. Board President Jason Johnson called the meeting to order promptly at 6:30 p.m. All Board members were present as was Superintendent Jeff Travis.

Travis yielded the floor to Jerry Boettcher to discuss the Little Red Schoolhouse renovation project. Travis told the Board the Katie Schroeder, Beloit City attorney, had drawn up a contractual agreement between the City, County and School Board to finalize the expectations and duties of the three entities for this project.

Boettcher said in the last meeting between representatives of these bodies the discussion was very positive with everyone focusing on working together to save this historic building. He also said they have a list of improvements that everyone agrees on that are necessary to restore the building. They will start with tearing off the old roof and re-sheeting it and then putting on new roofing material. Currently the roof is leaking resulting in damage to the interior of the building.

The group believes work can start soon with the crews taking advantage of warm winter days for repair work. A preliminary target completion date of Memorial Day weekend was establish. This weekend is the yearly Beloit Homecoming Weekend with large crowds usually returning to Beloit.

Boettcher commented that he was not aware of the deteriorating condition of the schoolhouse. He was a lifelong resident of Beloit until moving to Manhattan a few year ago. It wasn’t until he read a series of articles in the Beloit Call that he learned of the critical nature of the building.

Travis said that January is Board Appreciation Month. He extended a personal Thank You to the Board members for the time and energy they put into making the Beloit district a top-notch educational program.

Sydney Johnson, Beloit High STUCO president, updated the Board on the activities of her organization. She said the S
TUCO members spent an extended period of time working with Mr. Travis to create strong lines of communication. She said they had a very beneficial question and answer sessions. She also recognized the positive relationship between STUCO and Mr. Seyfert and Mr. Beisner.

Johnson said the Winter Homecoming is scheduled for February 2nd. They are still looking for a DJ for the dance.

Kristi Vetter and four of her band students presented their plans for a band trip to San Antonio, Texas. This is both an educational and recreational trip. Plans are to leave on Tuesday, March 20 on chartered buses for the travel to San Antonio. The days and nights are filled with a flurry of structured activities including a stop at the Alamo and a boat trip on the River Walk. Plans are to return to Beloit at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 24th. Assistant Principal Kyle Beisner will also accompany the 73 students.

The Board voted to approve the trip and the itinerary.
