Martin Dale Boyles, 90

Martin Dale Boyles was born on a farm northwest of Courtland, Kansas, on March 22, 1929, to Clyde M. and Minnie E. (Oglevie) Boyles. He attended grade school at Lincoln County School graduating in the spring of 1942. Dale attended Courtland High School. Immediately following graduation, he attended Emporia State Teachers College, securing enough hours to teach School District #9, Willow Dale for the fall term in 1946. He was 17 years old when he began teaching.
In January 1951, Dale enlisted in the Navy for 4 years. Most of his service time was spent in Naval Air Corps, alternating between California, Hawaii, and Japan. It was during these years that he married Artie Hatcher in the Christian Church located in Santa Rosa, California. To this union, 3 daughters were born - Wanda, Saundra, and Gail. After returning from the service, Dale attended Kansas Wesleyan University, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in education. Dale continued his schooling at Kansas State University graduating with a major in School Administration. He taught grade school in two County Schools (Willow Dale and Pack Hill), 7 & 8 grade in Scandia, and 5 & 6 grade in Courtland, Kansas. Dale also taught high school in Courtland for several years.
Dale was School Administrator in Cawker City, Downs, Waconda, Macksville, Hillcrest (Cuba) and for 18 years as Superintendent of Schools in Mankato, Kansas, USD 278, where he retired from the education field. Following his retirement, he was involved with the Mankato Lumber Yard and Home Center. Dale was involved in the Cuba American Legion, NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities), KSTA (Kansas State Teachers Association), KSAS, VSA, and KACD (Kansas Association of Conservation Districts).
Dale died Sunday, May 26, 2019 at the Jewell County Hospital, Mankato, Kansas, at the age of 90 years.
Dale is preceded in death by his wife, Artie; parents; brothers, Coy, Orland, and Bill; and sister.
He is survived by three daughters, Wanda and husband, Mark Hurd of Mankato, Kansas, Saundra and husband, Tim Sluss of Wheatland, Wyoming, and Gail and husband, Mark Kurlac of Lee Summit, Missouri; 5 grandchildren, Brandon, Whitney, Kyra, Delaney, and Shayne; six great-grandchildren, Andre, Bastian, Jordyn, Jaxton, Loralei, and Caleb; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Rodney Rose officiating. Mrs. Pat Grout will be the organist and Mr. Todd Jeffery will be the soloist. Hymns for the service are: "I'll Fly Away", "How Great Thou Art", and "Old Rugged Cross." Casket bearers will be: Brandon Hurd, Shayne Brown, Jesse Lyons, Matt Pierce, Larry Stewart, and Paul Osborne. Graveside services and military honors will be presented by United States Navy Reserve and Cuba American Legion at the Courtland Cemetery, Courtland, Kansas. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 28, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mortuary. The family suggests memorials to Mankato Endowment Association for scholarships, or Solomon Valley Hospice, Beloit, Kansas.
