Betty B. Koukal, 93

Betty Blanche Koukal, the daughter of W. Newell Axtell and W. Jewell (Freeman) Axtell, was born February 15, 1926 at Grandma Freeman's house northeast of Mankato, KS, and passed away on November 11, 2019 at Republic County Hospital at the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 4 days.
Betty grew up and attended schools in Mankato, KS graduating from Mankato High School in 1944. She worked for McCarthy Hardware in Mankato, and later for the Jewell-Mitchell R.E.C. She later was a seamstress for Scotts Specialties in Belleville. Betty then was a cook for Belleville School District for over 20 years until her retirement.
Betty was united in marriage to Virgil Van Wey on March 24, 1945 at Beloit, KS and children, Terry and Connie came to bless the home and he preceded her in death on July 25, 1953. She was united in marriage to Burton Wilson on December 31, 1955 at Mankato, KS and children Jerry and Vonda came to bless the home and he preceded her in death on August 31, 1966. On September 9, 1972, she was united in marriage to Joe Koukol at Belleville, KS and he preceded her in death on December 12, 2012.
Betty was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Mankato, KS and was active in the Women's Bowling League in Belleville for many years. Betty liked fishing and camping, bus trips with friends, crocheting and sewing for children and grandchildren, playing cards, and polka dancing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Virgil Van Wey, Burton Wilson, and Joe Koukol; and brothers, Forrest Freeman and Wallace Ward.
Betty is survived by two sons, Terry (Charlotte) Van Wey of Harveyville, KS, Jerry (Marla) Wilson, of Cuba, KS; two daughters, Connie (John) Sullivan of Aurora, CO, and Vonda (Robert) Wakefield of Mankato, KS; one step son, Duane Koukal of Craig, CO; two step daughters, Helen Poppe of Olsburg, KS, and Marilyn Koukal of Ruidoso, NM; 12 grandchildren, Lana, Sara, Lacey, Larrissa, Michell, Crista, Tandy, Lanessa, Zach, Seth, Curtis, and Allen; 23 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Marjorie Zadina of Beloit, KS, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the Bachelor-Surber Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Rod Rose, officiating.
Interment will be at the Belleville Cemetery, Belleville, KS.
Friends may call from 1 PM until 8 PM on Tuesday at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 5 PM until 7 PM.
Memorials are suggested to the Golden Bell Haven or the VFW Auxiliary, Mankato.
