WACONDA LAKERS DO WELL IN GREAT BEND MAYB TOURNAMENT

The Waconda Lakers a girls high school basketball team made up of girls from area towns competed June 28-29 in the Great Bend Mid America Youth Basketball tournament.  Team members: Brenna Eilert and Remi Behrends of Beloit, Jessica Princ from Osborne, Courtney Freed from Scandia, Drew Mann from Smith Center, Kirsten Burger from Kensington, Jordan Eshbaugh and Megan James from Concordia, Regan Casey of Natoma, and Kate Hula from Council Grove.
The first game of pool play was against Andale and the Lakers won 41 to 33 as they were led by Brenna Eilert with 10 points and Courtney Freed with 8.  The second game of pool play was against Ell Saline and the Lakers won 51 to 24 with Eilert leading the scoring again with 13 along with Kirsten Burger with 8 and Remi Beherends 6.
The third game of the weekend matched up the two winners of pool play the Lakers and the Dream Team to see who would get the top seed in bracket play.  After trailing by one point at half the Lakers played very well in the second half in the 48 to 43 win.  Jessica Princ doiminated inside scoring 15 points and Brenna Eilert finished with 9.  Regan Casey also played extremely well in the second half to help lead the Lakers to the win.
The Lakers matched up with a Hoxie/Colby team in the semi-finals on Sunday and despite a slow start the Lakers won 40 to 37 in a very intense game. Brenna Eilert and Jessica Princ led the team each scoring 8 points.  This set up a rematch with the Dream Team in the championship game.  An early deficit was too much to overcome as the Lakers lost 47 to 32.  Jordan Eshbaugh had her best game scoring 7 points and Drew Mann also played her best game of the weekend.
