Murlin Smith, Age 79

Murlin Jerome Smith was born December 26, 1935 at Tipton, KS to Pete and Mary (Henke) Smith and passed away March 2, 2015 at home. He attended school in Ionia and graduated from Jewell High School with the Class of 1954. After high school, Murlin worked on road construction util he was drafted into the service in 1958 and was on active duty in Germany until 1960. On December 26th, 1960, Murlin was united in marriage to Doris Thomas in Mankato at the Catholic Church. They were blessed with two children, Ronald and Lorena. Most of their married life was spent in Jewell where they celebrated 54 wonderful and happy years together. Murlin worked construction for the Jewell Country road department until he decided to follow his son's dream and started a harvest crew. He harvested until the doctors said no more. That is when he got to enjoy more of his time fishing, going to the casino, gardening, and playing a good game of cards.

Left to mourn Murlin's life are his wife, Doris; son, Ronald (Carla) Smith of Jewell; daughter Lorena (Kevin) Kellogg of Castle Rock, CO; grandchildren, Levi and Dakota Smith and Kaitlyn and Grant Kellogg; sister, Mariene (Roger) Dunlop of Buena Vista, CO; and many nieces and nephews. Murlin was preceded in death by his parents; brother Bill and sister-in-law Carolyn. 

Visitation will be held from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, Thursday, March 5th at the home (410 S Columbus, Jewell, KS). Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 6th at the Jewell Community Center, Jewell, KS. Memorials may be made to the Jewell County Hospital, Mankato, KS. Kleppinger Funeral Home, 409 Broadway, Jewell, KS 66949 is handling the arrangements.
