Milbern "Mel" Horkman, age 91, died Friday, July 10, 2015 at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia, KS. He was born on May 9, 1924 in Concordia, KS to Anton C. & Fannie E. (Klotz) Horkman.
Mel served in the US Navy as a baker & then continued at Gillian's Bakery. He married Lois Kersenbrock on June 25, 1950 in Concordia and she preceded him on Dec. 9, 2009. Mel was a US postal carrier for 38 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church & American Legion Post #76. He enjoyed sports, especially Royals baseball and following his children & grandchildren's sport activities. He also loved working in his garden, bowling & continued baking, as cookies & pies were his specialty.
He is survived by his sons: Steve Horkman (Shelly); John Horkman (Marjorie) & daughter, Julie Cory, all of Concordia; daughter: Susan Craig (Stuart), Lafayette, CO; grandchildren: Jeromy Horkman (Liz), Lawrence, Jenny Horkman, Kansas City, MO, Carly Loos (Dave), Lincoln, NE, Chelsey Horkman, Burkina Faso, Africa, Ethan & Erynn Cory, Concordia, Emily & Bailey Craig, Lafayette, CO; great grandson, Tyson Chesney, Concordia & sister, Lavina Gresham, Richmond, VA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois & his parents.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Tues., July 14, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, Concordia with Rev. Tessa Zehring officiating. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Post #76 & VFW Post #588 will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 am to 9 pm with family greeting friends from 6-7 pm, Mon., July 13, 2015 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.
