The Mitchell County Commissioners met on Monday March 27 to conduct their regular weekly meeting. All Commissioners were present as well as the County Clerk.

First they approved May 1 through May 6 as the dates for a county-wide community cleanup. A grant of $20,000 has been received from the Dane Hansen Foundation to fund the event. During that week, citizens of Mitchell County will be able to take trash to the county landfill and will not be charged any fees. The landfill will accept trash during the week at no cost until the $20,000 threshold is reached. Further details on the cleanup will be announced soon.

Barb Wise of OCCK joined the meeting. She said the State of Kansas has instituted a new policy that mandates a bidding process from providers of services such as the ones OCCK provides. The bid process will take place on a statewide basis. The commissioners signed a letter of support for OCCK supporting their participation in the bidding process

Carol Miller of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) told the Commissioners about an upcoming fundraiser at Kettle in Beloit on April 8. The “Batter of the Musicians” will feature three local musical acts to help raise money for CASA which represents at-risk children in the court system.

The Commissioners approved and signed a proclamation declaring April Child Abuse Prevention Month in Mitchell County.

Larry Heidrick and Tom Deneke of Mitchell County Fire District No. 1 were present to inform the commissioners they received a $6,000 check from the Kansas Department of Emergency Management for the services they provided in fighting the wildfires in south central Kansas last year

Larry Emerson appeared with incoming Superintendent of Public Works Dale Housh. They told the Commissioners that work on a bridge on K Road won’t start until after harvest. They believed it was possible work would not be completed in a timely fashion that problems would be experienced by harvest traffic and it was better to wait. They also said the road crews are currently graveling roads as needed. They also discussed the details of the upcoming community cleanup

The Commissioners approved the purchase of a new IBM AS400 computer server for courthouse. The cost of the new technology system is $22,488

Having addressed all the items on the printed agenda, the Commissioners adjourned the meeting.
