Scotties Hold On For Huge Win Over Garden City
It would be the play of the game. Freshman linebacker Logan Eck (Beloit) came through the line just as the Garden City quarterback fumbled the football, he scooped it up and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown with 5:07 left in the third quarter. It would prove to be the winning score as the Scotties held on for a 22-17 upset win over the Garden City Broncbusters.
For Scottie fans, it was a game of wild emotional swings and a nail-biting finish. The Highland defense was simply outstanding all day. They caused four fumbles, recovering two, and intercepted one Broncbuster pass. It would be the Scottie defense that bent but did not break in the second half in route to the shocking upset of heavily favored Garden City, sending shock waves thoughout the Jayhawk Conference.
The Scotties struck first with a 65-yard touchdown pass from freshman Rashad Jackson (Albany, Ga.) to freshman wideout Devonta Glover (Austell, Ga.) with 9:28 left in the first quarter. A Cameron Owens (freshman, Topeka) point after attempt was successful making the score 7-0 in favor of Highland.
In the second quarter, the Broncbusters looked to tie the game with a 2-yard touchdown pass with 10:55 to play but the PAT was wide right and the Scotties held a one point advantage. On the ensuing possession, the Scotties were forced to punt from their endzone and again special teams would break down as the Busters blocked the punt for a safety and took an 8-7 lead.
Late in the second, the Scotties capped off a long drive with a Tony Cornelius (sophomore, Boynton Beach, Fla.) 1-yard touchdown run to retake the lead. Jackson ran in the two-point PAT to extend the Highland lead to 15-8 at halftime.
The fourth quarter would belong to Garden City as Highland's offense struggled to find positive yards. The Broncbusters first connected on a 23-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 22-14 with 11:56 to play. They put points on the board again with 7:47 to play with a 38-yard field goal to make the score 22-17. Garden City had several more chances to win the game but the Scottie defense won the day, finishing the game with a big sack by Eck and great team pass defense.
Offensively, Jackson completed four of 16 pass attempts for 97 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, freshman Latavious Willis (Newnan, Ga.) had a big day, rushing for 71 yards on 23 carries.
On defense, Eck led the Scotties with 13 total tackles, including eight solo stops, two for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery for the winning score. Freshman Gatlin Ridgway (Danville, Ohio) had 12 total stops, including five solo tackles, one for loss, and two pass defenses. Sophomore Akintunde Bakare (Woodbridge, Va.) and freshman Gary Daniels (Onaga) both had five tackles for the Scotties. Daniels caused two fumbles and Bakare recovered one.
The Scotties next travel to the #6 ranked Butler County Community College for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, September 11 in El Dorado, Kan.
