Beloit has been blessed for the past summers with interns in the middle of their college experience. This intern experience provides able young people a chance to put their book learnin' to work. It also allows them to work under the supervision of local leaders who serve as mentors to these young people. Most summers the interns work for several supervisors doing a multitude of tasks with casual or pressing deadlines. This allows the interns a challenge to complete various assignments, working under various supervisors while soaking up the culture of Beloit and North Central Kansas.
As stated, Beloit has been blessed with eager and able interns in the past. Our town hit the jackpot once again as Beloit is hosting Dinah Newman for a summer of learning and doing. This Great Bend native is no stranger to leadership and teambuilding undertakings. Her high school resume is filled with a plethora of organizations in which Dinah Newman is listed at the top or near the top of the organizational structure.
Newman is in-between her sophomore and junior years at Fort Hays State University. She is majoring in Communications with an already completed minor in History.
Newman said, "I like this position. It has a variety of duties. No day is the same. It is truly a ‘hands on' position."
One of her major assignments is with Community Development with Emily Benedick.
"My job is to research through volumes of grants and to identify grants that might match up to rural businesses," said Newman. "There is money out there, but you have to work for it."
The County-Wide mural project is another area in which she is applying her skills. This project began in Mitchell County last summer and continues to gain speed.
"I have been very involved in the Mural project," commented Newman. "Most people only see the finished project but there is a great deal to do to get it to that point; fundraising is a big part of getting a mural painted. It goes on and on. All the behind the seen work happens before any pain is applied."
In addition to being supervised by Benedick, Newman is being mentored by Chamber of Commerce director Hannah Bowers and Tourism Director Lucille Heller.
"Working with Hannah and Lucille is very educational," said Newman. "I get to meet all kinds of people from all over the county. I am getting a good idea of all that goes into decision making that affect all the people in the county."
When asked about her plans for when her tenure at Fort Hays is complete, she responded, "I hope to create a Community Development program similar to that created by Christina Hayes. When she came to Great Bend there was almost nothing going on in that category. After working very hard and starting at ground level she has created a program that others try to emulate. I would like to create something like that."
