Norman Clinton Greene, 93

Norman Clinton Greene was born in rural Beverly, Kansas, on October 6, 1930 to Niles and Mary Chilcott Greene. He passed away on July 9, 2024 at the age of 93.
Norman wed Mary Ann Jarvis on October 28, 1951. She preceded him in death on October 19, 2000, 9 days before their 49th wedding anniversary. Together they had four children, Steven, Shirley, Susan and Scott. Norm was united in marriage to Doris Winkel Slate on December 16, 2002 and their encore love story brought so much joy, love and light to our blended family. Doris departed this earthly world on January 3, 2023 leaving Norman broken hearted for the second time in his life.
In the spring of 1934, Norman moved to Jewell County with his parents and sister "Peg" (Marjorie) on a wagon and hay-rack pulled by a team of horses. He graduated from Jewell High School in 1948 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in January of 1951 where he served in San Antonio, Texas, Wichita Falls, Texas, Bushy Park, England, and El Paso, Texas until he was discharged with an Excellent Character Rating in October 1954.
Norman moved Mary Ann and his firstborn to the Greene Farmstead at the conclusion of his military career and worked the farming operation alongside his father, Niles. From 1957 to 1967 they welcomed three more children and built a new home. The family continued to manage the Grade A dairy operation, farm the land, and raise cattle. In 2013 Norman and Doris built a new home on the south edge of Jewell where they welcomed friends and family for visits over tea, pies, and homemade ice cream and enjoyed each other's company for their last 10 years together.
Norm will be remembered for his ornery nature, homemade ice cream, and woodworking skills. He was a proud military veteran, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He found joy in blacksmithing with restoring and building horse buggies, for which he won several awards, and taking his grandchildren on trail rides. He was a devoted cattleman, farmer, dairyman, and horseman. Throughout his extensive life, Norman was engaged in many civic organizations where he served on the Musser Fund Board of Directors and USD 279 School Board, was involved with the Kansas Livestock Association, lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW, supporter of FFA and 4-H, and a member of Jewell Christian Church. You could often find Norm in the stands at area school events supporting all the children he loved.
Norman's legacy will live on through the Greene Farmstead where the seventh generation of Greenes live, continue to farm, and raise cattle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; sister, Peg; son-in-law, Jeffery; brother, Jerry; and beloved mule, Kate.
Norman is survived by his sister in-law, Phyllis Greene, Emporia, Kansas; four children, Steve (Susan) Greene, Jewell, Shirley (Steve) Upschulte, Kansas City, Susan (Max) Bean, Glen Elder, Kansas, and Scott (Janelle) Greene, Jewell; six grandchildren, Nathan (Amber) Greene, Jewell, Kristy (Travis) Ladd Culp, Kansas City, Missouri, Jacob (Sara) Greene, McFarland, Kansas, Brittany (Matthew) Boyce, Valley Falls, Kansas, Chelsey Greene, Claytonia, Nebraska, and Corbin Greene, Jewell; and six great-grandchildren, Sadie, Kinley, Dakota, Malia, Wade and Bridger; seven step-children, 12 step-grandchildren, 20 step-great grandchildren, and four step-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family, friends and coffee pals who will miss him and his ice cream dearly.
Visitation will take place at Jewell Christian Church on Friday, July 12, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Services will be held at Jewell Christian Church on Saturday, July 13, at 2:00 p.m., followed by graveside service at Wallace Cemetery and cookie reception at Jewell Christian Church.
