MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS - Monday, August 5, 2024

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their weekly meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning, August 5. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present.
Superintendent of Public Works Marty Hernandez was at the meeting to present information to the Commissioners on a possible truck purchase. He located a 2017 dump truck with salt spreader at the State of Kansas surplus inventory lot in Salina a number of months ago. The truck had been damaged when an uninsured motorist struck the rear of truck inflicting moderate damage. Because the driver of the car did not have insurance, the situation has been tied up in litigation since the accident.
The original asking price for the truck, a 2007 International 7400, was $23,000. Hernandez has negotiated the price down to $18,000. When asked what the price of a similar truck brand new would be he replied, "Over $250,000."
Hernandez believed it would be possible to restore the truck to good working condition. The Commissioners gave Hernandez the green light to make deal for the truck.
The Commissioners took time to compliment the Mitchell County Fair Board for once again, putting on a first-rate county fair. They also extended congratulations to the Tipton community for another very successful picnic.
The Commissioner approved payment to Hinkle Exterminators for treating the Recycling Center Building at the fairgrounds to get rid of all the termites. The bill was $3,417.55.
City Administrator Halley Roberson was present to discuss an outstanding bill for a transformer installed at the new County Shop building. It appears as if the architects were not on top of the requirements for the building and the County. The contractor and the sub-contractor had to make a last-minute deal to provide this required electrical device.
At an earlier meeting with the Commissioners, John Senger and Kyle Heineken, it appeared as if the details of who was supposed to pay for what was cleared up. However, the deal was still up in the air.
Commissioner Mike Cooper called Kyle Heineken and was able to secure a commitment for him to pay for the transformer. It seems as if a bill clearly stating this liability had not been provided to him.
County Health Nurse Cortney Murrow was present with a contract for WIC dietician services with Julie Reden for the upcoming year. The Women, Infant and Children program is a federal program to provide nutritional services to new families to ensure proper nutrition.
Having addressed all items on the printed agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
