MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS - Monday, August 19, 2024

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their weekly meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning, August 19. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present.
The first matter of business was the approving of the primary election results from August 6. Last week after reviewing all the details of the election presented by County Clerk Heather Weston, the Commissioners gave preliminary approval the results and gave any citizen one week to air any concerns. Nobody came forward with any issues. Because of this, the Commissioners voted to accept the primary election results.
Weston said there were 1548 votes cast, which is 36% of the possible votes.
Next was the approval of the budgets for Mitchell County, Tipton Fire District, Solomon Rapids Fire District, the Mitchell County Weed Department, and the townships of Lulu, Center, Logan, Eureka and Hays.
Having nobody appear to speak for or against the proposed budgets, the Commissioners voted to accept the budgets as presented.
Topics of Women's Health and Social Media drew considerable attention during the meeting.
Cortney Murrow, County Health Nurse, requested permission for her assistant, Kristin Kadel, to attend an out-of-state trip. She will travel to Philadelphia during the second week of September for a National Conference on Women's Health. The State of Kansas will pick up the tab for her expenses and Mitchell County will not have to pay anything for her trip.
Murrow informed the Commissioners that she had received 100% of a grant request to Kansas Health and Environment. She was informed that they had more money than usual, so they were giving her 100% of what she asked for. She was also cautioned that this was a one-time occurrence and will not happen again. The Mitchell County Health Department will receive $38,900. The money must be used for programs related to women's health.
A spirited discussion regarding the pros and cons of social media in today's world followed. There are obviously many good things available on the internet that children can become involved with. Along with that, there any many bad things that kids can get involved with.
County Health Nurse Cortney Murrow summed up the situation when she said, "If parents were willing to be parents, much of the bad could be omitted."
Two Neighbor Revitalization Grants were approved. One was to Doug Devore for a garage/house in amount of $77,680. The other went to Jeanette and Charles Luke for a 36' x 54' addition to their veterinary clinic in the amount of $459,000.
Having addressed all the items on the printed agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
