The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their weekly business meeting at the Courthouse on Monday, September 23, 2024. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present for the meeting.
A Neighborhood Revitalization Grant was approved for Byron Palen. The request was for a 30' by 40' TREB building. Also included in the request was a 100' by 8' lean-to attachment. The total for the request was $54,900. Palen's request was unanimously approved by the Commissioners.
Commissioner Jim Marshall reported that he had attended the recent Health Board meeting at the hospital. He said Kristin Kadel reported on her recent attendance at a National Family Medicine health conference in Philadelphia, Penn. Marshall reported that Mitchell County has 115 people enrolled in the Women-Infants-Children (WIC) program that assists women and infants with nutrition assistance.
Marshall reported that the County Health Department will host a Health Fair October 14-18. This event is usually well attended.
Alicia Shannon, representing Resounds Network Internet, was present to discuss the efforts her company in their attempt to provide internet service to people in areas of low service or no service. She made it clear her company is not in competition with Cunningham. Much of their funding comes from a Broadband Equity Access Development (BEAD) grant.
Ms. Shannon asked the Commissioners to provide a letter of support as they attempt to provide Broadband internet service to folks in rural Kansas. The Commissioners agreed to provide such a letter.
Carol Torkelson from the Regional Planning Commission was present with paperwork pertaining to distribution of COVID funds. To receive these funds, businesses were required to complete lengthy and detailed application forms. Dairy Queen, Ludwig Chiropractic, Kettle and Trapper Joe's filed initial paperwork. Torkelson was present to have the Commissioners sign on two of the completed applications. These were from Kettle and Ludwig Chiropractic. The Commissioners approved those two finalized applications.
There will be no Commissioners meeting next week due to it being the fifth Monday of the month
