Victoria "Vicki" Sue Nylund, 74, of Scandia, Kansas, passed away at Republic County Hospital, surrounded by loved ones, on December 11, 2024.
She was born in Concordia, Kansas, on September 28, 1950, to Loren Victor and Maxine (Milner) Florell. They, along with her older sister Janice, lived on their farm southwest of Scandia until they moved to Scandia when Vicki was 4 years old.
She attended Scandia Schools where she was a cheerleader, played clarinet, and sang Triple Trio Glee Club. She was the Sweetheart Queen of 1965, the Homecoming Queen of 1967, and graduated as Salutatorian in 1968. She went on to attend Fort Hays State University where she made lifelong friends.
She was baptized at Amana Lutheran Church and then confirmed there in 1963. Then she was a member of WELCA, the women's group. She was also a member of the Svenska Club and served as Computer Secretary for Membership for Kansas Reading Association for 10 years.
She married James "Jim" Nylund on April 11, 1970, at Amana Lutheran Church. They later welcomed two children, Stefanie and Scott.
She started her 40-year career at the Pike Valley Board Office in 1980, serving as secretary and then board clerk, and then returning as secretary post-retirement.
Vicki loved sports of all kinds, especially watching her kids and grandkids. She traveled to multiple states for basketball, football, soccer, golf and volleyball.
She loved family fishing trips to Texas, fishing trips with friends to various places, including El Salvador, and all of the trips made with her friends from FHSU. She especially enjoyed having coffee at the Beauty Shop in Scandia with her friends.
Vicki is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Janice McCaulley; brother-in-law, Johnny Nylund; and mother and father-in law, Virginia and John Nylund.
She will be missed by her husband, James Nylund of Scandia; daughter, Stefanie Burgess (Tim) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son, Scott Nylund (Erin) of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Austin Burgess (McKayla) of Pueblo, Colorado, Hannah Burgess of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Lauren Nylund, Emma Nylund, and Ben Nylund, all of Overland Park, Kansas; great-grandson, Payton Burgess of Pueblo, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Nancy Molter and Judy Nylund; brother-in-law, Roger McCaulley; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and other family.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Amana Lutheran Church in Scandia, Kansas with Pastor Kathy Aeillo officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Scandia, Kansas.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 15, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home with family greeting friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
