I, Phyllis Ann Thull, was born November 12, 1927, on a farm north of Cawker City, Kansas. My parents were Fred and Velda Schoen. I have one lovely sister, Joyce Heller of Los Osos, California, and one handsome brother, John Schoen (deceased). Growing up during the Dust Bowl Days was frightening and difficult for me and my family! I remember my mother putting wet cloths over all the windows to keep out the dust and over baby John's crib too so he could breathe. I've told my children and grandchildren this story countless times! My father was a quiet and hardworking farmer. My mom was funny, sassy and very creative. In hard times she could make something out of nothing.
I graduated from Cawker City High School in 1945. After graduation I moved to Denver, Colorado, with two of my best girlfriends. We all found jobs working in a clothing and fur store. I was overjoyed to be off the farm, living in the city, and driving a car instead of a horse and buggy. YAY! My next adventure took me to Wichita, Kansas, for a two-year cosmetology program. I soon returned to my hometown to land my first job. I loved my profession as a beautician with Zoe Conn whose beauty shop was conveniently located next to "The Bank." So began my next chapter with "The Banker" who loved to ride Harleys. My dad was skeptical but... a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do - hop on the back! This was the beginning of our "Lifetime Ride" together. So, on a cold, icy morning on January 25, 1949, Phil G. Thull took me to be his wife! To this day, I don't know how I kept from freezing to death in my wedding dress! Our marriage brought us two children. We were blessed with Sandra and Jo. How proud we were of our beautiful girls.
My love of travel began with Phil's business trips which took us to many beautiful places. We continued to travel with friends, kids and grandkids throughout our lives.
If you know me, you know my love of cards and games. Bridge being my FAVORITE; it truly was my passion. I love both the game and the girls who played it with me. Cards, dominos and other games rewarded me with dear friends, the best support groups, lots of laughter, and a calendar full of fun! You'd also know I loved Friday nights at the Beloit Country Club, sparkly manicures, and stylish clothes.
Oh, and how I loved my home, especially decorating for all of the holidays!
I was blessed with a wonderful, loving family:
My daughter, Sandra McCart and husband Jack of Wamego, Kansas, their three children: Cory McCart and girlfriend Martha Whitehair of Manhattan, Kansas, Lindsay (McCart) Beets and husband Justin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, their children Winston and Rosemary, and Drew McCart and wife Katy of Overland Park, Kansas, their children Jack and Tommy.
My daughter, Jo Pastrovich and husband Mark of Beloit, Kansas, their daughter Claire Pastrovich and boyfriend Ryan Dumas of El Paso, Texas.
My two step grandsons Rich and Tim McCart and countless nieces and nephews.
My heart is tucked full of beautiful memories of my precious family and friends. Our lives have had a few tears, but many, many good laughs and stories. If only you knew how grand my life was!
I fought so hard this past year as I knew my time was drawing near. Now I'm in my heavenly home... my peaceful place, hoping you'll all remember me with style and grace. Keep smiling and love one another. - Phyllis Thull
