Philip was the youngest of 8 siblings. He attended Superior Public Schools and graduated high school in 1971. Philip never married. After graduating Philip became an over the road hauler. Philip hauled for Rex Christensen and he also enjoyed going fishing with Rex and hunting deer along the river. For a few years he hauled cement for a company in Eastern Nebraska.
When Philip returned to the Hastings area he met Ruben Wenhens. Philip enjoyed harvest and hauling the grain to the elevator or helping Ruben move machinery from one field to another. Of course, the best times were going to eat at one of their favorite eating establishments. Ruben was one of Philip's closest friends along with Alan Hornbussel.
