Gloria Marie (German) Black was born on September 19, 1933, in a farmhouse situated along Walnut Creek southwest of Glen Elder, Kansas which is now part of Waconda Lake. She was the fifth of six children born to Harold and Cecil (Brodie) German. She entered eternal life on March 30th 2026 at the age of 92.
Gloria graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1951, and was united in marriage to Lowell (DeWayne) Black on October 18th, 1953. DeWayne and Gloria were happily married for 49 years until his death in 2002. Other than the time she spent living out-of-state with DeWayne while he fulfilled his military obligations, she was a life-long resident of Mitchell County and lived in the same farmhouse for over 70 years. Gloria took pride in taking care of her home and raising their four children all while building a farming and ranching operation. Over the years, Gloria took on many roles including being a CNA at Long Term Care, and a cook at the Beloit Elementary School. She never made a bad meal, but we especially loved her homemade chocolate chip cookies, bread and cinnamon rolls. She welcomed everyone to her table, and always had a large stash of goodies hidden in the freezer.
Gloria was known for the love she had for her grandchildren. She spent time teaching them how to bottle-feed calves, and play on the hay bales. She would even take them down the water slides at the pool well into her late 70s. Every year she bought new shoes for each of them.
Gloria demonstrated her Christian faith by always showing generosity, and a strong concern for others. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, niece, cousin, aunt, sister-in-law, mentor and friend to all. She approached life with contentment and simplicity, and we miss her already.
Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, DeWayne; her son, Jed; her parents, Harold and Cecil; sisters, Alice, Phyllis, Maxine, and brother Harold.
She is survived by her children; Joe of Wichita, John "Jack" (Becky) of Wichita and Jilinda (Gary) Bickel of Wichita; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, sister Lois (Dale) Rafie of Norwalk, OH and sister-in-laws Marlene German of Glen Elder and Nadine Adams of Junction City.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Tuesday, April 7 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM, with family present from 5-7 PM Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Solomon Valley Transportation.
