Roger "Kim" Gaston, 74

Roger "Kim" Gaston, 74, of Glen Elder, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems in Beloit, Kansas.

Kim was born on February 21, 1952, in Beloit, KS to Joe and Ruby Gaston. He was the oldest and only son of six children. He graduated from Glen Elder High School with the Class of 1970. Kim was a proud Bearcat that participated and lettered in all sports, band, and was in the school plays. He went on to attend Emporia State College, where he was a freshman letterman on the Hornet football team.

In 1971, Kim enlisted in the Kansas National Guard and served for six years. Following basic training, he began his career with the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Council Grove, KS, working first as a brakeman and later as a fireman.

On June 8, 1974, Kim was united in marriage to Kathy "Kay" Porter. Together they shared nearly 52 years of love, partnership, and cherished memories. The couple made their first home in Council Grove, KS, while Kim worked for the railroad. In 1975, they returned to Glen Elder to establish their roots and raise a family. They were blessed with two children, Shasta Lyn and Kam Jerod, who quickly became the center of their world.

Kim had a deep love for the outdoors and dedicated much of his life to working the land. In June 1975, he started working with his father-in-law and brothers-in-law at Porter Porkers Partnership, where he found great satisfaction in caring for cattle and farming. In the 1990s, Kim started farming on his own. He later founded Kim-Kay Trucking. He was proud of building the company from a single truck into at one time a fleet of eleven.

One of Kim's greatest passions was firearms and the outdoors. He spent countless hours teaching not only Shasta and Kam; but also his nieces and nephews, the respect, responsibility, and appreciation he had for guns. He loved taking them to the shooting range, organizing trapshooting competitions in his backyard, and also managing annual pheasant hunts for his cousins. His extensive gun collection reflected both his passion and pride.

Kim was a devoted father and grandfather who rarely missed a sporting event, school activity, or special occasion involving Shasta and Kam. He was also a number one fan of his nieces' and nephews' activities. His pride continued to grow as he later watched his grandchildren, Braedee and Brecken, participate in sports and other events. Kim was a member of the First Methodist Church of Glen Elder. Time spent with family was among his greatest joys. Fishing trips, boating adventures, cookouts on the hill, and countless family gatherings created treasured memories that will never be forgotten by those who loved him.

Kim was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Ruby Gaston; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Max and Phyllis Porter; and his beloved son, Kam Gaston.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Gaston of the home; daughter Shasta (Bryan) Weatherman of Minneapolis, KS; grandchildren Braedee and Brecken Weatherman; daughter-in-law Toni Gaston, Wichita, KS; sisters, Vicki (Darel) Stuart, Connie (Kirk) Cates, Tammy Gaston, Carla (Gary) Carl, and Jennifer Naumann; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Kim will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to family, his generosity, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.

Memorial services will be at 2 PM Monday, June 8 at the First Methodist Church of Glen Elder. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM, with family present from 4-6 PM Sunday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Methodist Church of Glen Elder or the Mitchell County Food Pantry.
