Larry D. Olsen, the son of Omar "Ole" D. Olsen and Katherine (Kendall) Olsen, was born December 18, 1939 in Scandia, Kan., and passed away on September 9, 2020 at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kan., at the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 21 days.
Larry grew up and attended the local public schools in Scandia, graduating from Scandia High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 until 1965 and was stationed in Hawaii. On December 4, 1965 he was united in marriage to Lola Sandell and to this union: Lana, Stacey and Ryan were born. Larry worked for Reece Construction, the Feedlot and at his Father's blacksmith shop in his early years. He then worked for the Republic County Highway Department for 39 years, retiring as shop foreman.
Larry was a member of the American Legion Post #193, Scandia, Kan., and a member of United Methodist Church, Scandia. He was the sexton/caretaker at Riverview Cemetery for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Katherine Olsen; father-in-law, Charles Sandell; brother-in-law, Gary Keeling; sister-in-law, Shirley Sandell; and son-in-law, Hans Jensen.
Larry is survived by his wife, Lola Olsen of Scandia, Kan.; two daughters, Lana (Randy) Thayer of Republic, Kan., and Stacey (Bruce) Runft of Scandia, Kan.; one son, Ryan Olsen (Humphrey Sui) of Shenyang, China; nine grandchildren: Amanda Jensen (Jeremy Fredrickson), Tyler (Samantha) Jensen, Jeremy Thayer, Jordan (Monica) Thayer, Britt (Michael) Wright, Cody (Lindsay) Runft, Jaid Runft, Payton Runft, and Mason Runft; 10 great grandchildren; one brother, Hans (Judy) Olsen of Scandia, Kan.; two sisters, Carol (Bob) Brant and Sonja Keeling, all of Superior, Neb.; other relatives and many friends.
Visitation for friends will be held from 1 PM until 8 PM on Friday, September 11, 2020 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Scandia, Kan. We kindly suggest friends to wear masks at the visitation and practice social distancing. All are welcome to the visitation at the funeral home.
The family will have a private service Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Sandra Jellison-Knock, officiating. Cremation will follow the services and inurnment will be at a later date.
