Robert Leon Steimel, 74, of Concordia, Kansas, died April 23, 2021. Bob was born December 4, 1946, in Dodge City, Kansas, the son and oldest child of Herman and Waneta Vogel Steimel. He was the oldest grandchild of Martin and Adela Vogel and Adolph and Anna Steimel.
The oldest of six children, "Bobby" was an early leader, and close to his siblings for his entire life. He graduated from Claflin High School in 1964, and went on to be the first in his family to graduate college in his family with a Bachelor of Accounting from FHSU in 1968, and then an MBA from KSU in 1973. He joined Kennedy and Coe, LLC in 1973, working first in Colby, Kansas, then moving to Concordia, where he became managing partner. He worked for Kennedy and Coe, LLC for 29 years before retiring in 2002. He was a lifetime member of the Kansas Association of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs.
He served in the Army as a Specialist 5th Class from 1968 to 1971, and during that time was stationed in both Turkey (NATO) and the state of Washington.
Bob married Maridell Goings, in 1970 in Claflin, Kansas. From their marriage, Bob and Maridell have four children, fourteen grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He enjoyed being a father, teasing his children with his wry sense of humor, attending their plays, concerts, and sporting events, and taking them to KSU games. Maridell preceded him in death in 1996. Bob remarried in 2006, to Lorene Baxa in Concordia, Kansas. They loved to travel to visit their children and grandchildren in all parts of the country.
Throughout his life, Bob served on numerous committees, boards, and organizations. Notably, the Knights of Columbus, reaching 4th degree navigator within the Knights and serving as District Deputy from 2010-2014; Rotary, serving as local president and then District Governor; the Cloud County Community College Foundation; Cloud Corp; and St. Joseph Hospital Board. He started the CCCC auction in 1981 and founded the Notre Dame Scholarship Trust with OLPH.
In Bob's view, his greatest gift to the community of Concordia was the Community Foundation for Cloud County that he founded in 2002. Bob worked tirelessly for 19 years to build the Foundation to the entity it is today, establishing a lasting gift that will benefit the area for years to come.
Surviving family include his wife, Lorene; daughter, Rodella (Della) Strait and her children, Kirstin, Zachary, and Keidra and grandson, Parker of Concordia. Also, surviving is his daughter, Pamela and her husband, Scott Wiederholt and their sons, Mason, Henry, Caleb, and Simon of JBMDL, New Jersey. The third surviving daughter is Deborah Steimel-Clair and her husband, Joe Clair, with their children, Dylan, Liam, Fiona, Maridell (Maggie), and Niamh from Chicago. A surviving son is Charles (Chaz) and his wife, Sarah, with their children, Cate and William from Ogden, Utah. Bob is also survived by his three sisters, Carol Ahlvers, Sharon Steimel, and Rosalee Steimel and one brother, Lyle Steimel. He was preceded in death by his wife (Maridell), parents, his brother, Glenn Steimel, brothers-in-law, David Ahlvers and Roger Greene and sister-in-law, Amy Fink.
Mass of Christian burial will be April 29, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Concordia, with Fr. David Metz and Fr. Henry Baxa officiating. Burial to follow at St. Concordia Catholic Cemetery. Evening Vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary services will be at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, at 7:00 p.m. on April 28, 2021 with Fr. David Metz officiating. Family will receive friends after the Vigil and Rosary Service.
His loss will be felt by both his family and community.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials can be donated in Bob's name to either the Community Foundation for Cloud County or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in care of Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.
