MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS – Monday, April 4, 2022

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular weekly meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning, April 4th. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present.
Julia Rabe, director of the Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce and Emily Benedick, Economic Development Director were on hand to tell the Commissioners about a new project they are working on. The activity of decorating local structures with murals has gained great popularity around Kansas and other midwestern states. They referred to murals now decorating the city of Clay Center as a local example of mural artwork.
The Chamber and the Economic Development agency are hoping to partner with local businesses and citizens to create a private fund to pay for local murals. They are meeting with the city councils of all towns in Mitchell County to gauge interest. Their plan is to work on one mural at a time so that they do not overload the process. They also pointed to the north exterior wall of the Schnell and Pestinger's warehouse as a local mural created by Greg Holdren. They emphasized the fact that no taxpayer dollars will be used to create the murals. The project will be funded by grants and private donations. They estimated the cost of each mural would run $5,000 to $10,000.
Sanitation services was the second topic of the meeting. Mitchell County is a member of a muti-county consortium that provides sanitation services to the citizens of these counties. The major responsibilities for the Sanitation Officer is to inspect wells to ensure clean drinking water and to inspect septic systems to ensure the system is doing the job for which it was designed to do. Sherry Koster has served as the sanitation officer for the consortium for a number of years. She had resigned the position to take on a job in the private sector. Commissioner Tom Claussen said, "The Six-county group will need to decide if we want to continue with an officer hired by the consortium to take care of sanitation services for all six counties or for each county to hire their own sanitation officer. We have a multi-county meeting coming up in Ellsworth. That will be an opportunity to see what the other counties are thinking."
Have addressed all items on the printed agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
