MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS – Monday, June 20, 2022

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their weekly meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning, June 20th. All the Commissioners and the County Clerk were present.
Amanda Johnson, representing the Soil Conservation department, presented their proposed 2023 budget for the Commissioner's consideration. She commented that the proposed budget was a status quo budget with no major increases in spending. The Commissioners thanked Johnson for the insightful work done to preserve our natural resources.
Marty Hernandez, Director of Public Work, was on hand to report on his research for a replacement truck to replace the current 2009 F-450 service truck. The current service vehicle is showing its age and is no longer able to perform as needed. Hernandez has located a possible replacement truck on the State of Kansas surplus vehicle list in Topeka. He sent two members of his crew to Topeka to inspect the vehicle and they reported was in good condition. The list price on the vehicle is $23,000. David Williams, a local contractor, can install a crane and a complete box on the truck. This would make the total investment of $60,000-$70,000 when all the work is done. Hernandez said, "When all the work is done we will have pretty much a new vehicle." The Commissioners gave Hernandez the okay to purchase the replacement vehicle. He also told the Commissioners that the initial work has began on the new shop building. Digging on the footings for the building has started, marking the first step in the work.
Sheila Nelson-Stout and Susan Sprague representing OCCK were on hand to give the Commissioners their proposed budget for next hear. Stout-Nelson, Executive Director of OCCK, said they had very good results last year. They were able to serve more people than ever before assisted. Two hundred thirty-three residents of Mitchell County were served by OCCK. They provided 1,836 rides last year. She presented a status quo budget to the Commissioners. Mitchell County's share of OCCK's total budget is $55,723.
Having addressed all the items on the printed agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
