David Dean Hughes, 90

David Dean Hughes, "Poppie," went to be with our Gracious God on August 2, 2022 at the youthful age of 90, in his home, blessed to be surrounded by family that loves him. He was born on June 2, 1932 in Jamestown, Kansas, to Elijah Lee and Pearl Jeannette Harris Hughes.
At the age of 17, he met Alice Marie Robbins and the two were united in marriage on October 15, 1950 in Belleville, Kansas. To this union, four children were born, Richard Dean, Deborah Dean, David Dean II, and Doreen Dean. David and Alice spent many years traveling the United States chasing his job where he became the youngest paint superintendent for a C.L. Delong company, Southwestern Public Services Power Plants. In 1965 David became self-employed as United Industrial Painting and worked for Southwestern Public Services doing maintenance and painting of power plants, microwave towers, smoke-stacks, and water towers. His last water tower to paint was in Clyde, Kansas, where him and Alice had established their homestead. In 1970 Dave and Alice purchased Mom & Pops in Clyde and operated the business for 30 years. Together they shared many adventures over the years, such as, owning and operating a tree trimming and snow removal business, United Auto Sales, Hughes and Hughes Waterbed, Hughes Entertainment, Mom & Pops 2, and even the St. Joe Store for 30 days. He was a skilled worker and a jack of all trades. Two of his favorite activities were riding the motorcycle and dancing with Alice. They rode many miles together on his prized motorcycle, sometimes short distances, and others across the United States. They also won several dancing competitions. He had many interests in life including fishing, hunting and training hunting dogs, riding horses, singing, dancing, telling stories, laughing and making others laugh, teaching his grandchildren how to drive cars, ride bikes, play pool, many valuable life lessons such as feeding the donkeys or walking the turtles (so many stories we could tell), and most importantly spending time with family and friends. He was always willing to give advice, whether you wanted to hear it or not, he never knew a stranger, and would not hesitate to help a person in need. He was ornery, quick witted, and loved to tease people. He lived a good, full life, and he had fun doing it.
Poppie's pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Alice of Clyde, Kansas; their children, Deborah Czapanskiy (Bill), Clyde, Kansas, David Hughes II (Patti), Lampe, Missouri, Doreen Anderson (Jim) Clyde, Kansas; eight grandchildren, David Hughes III (Brandi), Overland Park, Kansas, Billy Czapanskiy (Chandra), Ames, Kansas, Elijah Hughes (Caressa), Thorton, Colorado, Bradley Czapanskiy (Julie), Concordia, Kansas, Christi Olliverson (Eric), Shell Knob, Missouri, Shane Hughes (Kendra), Overland Park, Kansas, Jerlynn Johnston (Jarrod), Concordia, Kansas, Adam Junek (Emily), Cuba, Kansas; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Pearl Hughes; brothers and sisters, Glen Adams, Edith Bisnette, Charley Hughes, Nadine Griffiths, Vera Tieking, Vernon Hughes, Billie Mack Hughes, Eddie Hughes, Louvena Larson; son, Richard, and grandson, Jared; son-in-law, Ed Junek.
David was a very special man that touched many lives. He was so loved and will be missed by so many. Prior to his death, he informed his family that he would do it his way, and he did.
David has chosen cremation. Visitation will be held on Thursday August 4, 2022 from 1:00 to 8:00 pm at the Chaput Mortuary in Clyde with family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday August 5, 2022 at 2:00 pm at The Branch in Clyde, Kansas, with David Hughes III and Rebekah Amerin officiating.
David has requested a gathering for a celebration of his life at B's place, former Mom and Pops in Clyde, following Celebration of Life Services.
The family suggests memorials be made to David Dean Hughes memorial fund which will be determined by the family at a later date in care of Chaput Mortuary, P.O. Box 291, Clyde, KS 66938.
