MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS – Monday, March 6, 2023

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular weekly meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning, March 6th. All Commissioners were present for the meeting.
First up was Becky Snook, Director of Communications. Snook requested a ten-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel. At the end of the closed session, it was announced that no decisions had been made.
Jason Vetter was present to give his 2023 yearly report for mitigation of noxious weeds in Mitchell County. This is an annual event to plan for treating unwanted weeds.
Vetter submitted bids for a spray boom to mount on his pickup to the Commissioners. It will also make spraying of vegetation along guard rails more effective. The Commissioners approve an expenditure of $12,587.77 for a spray boom.
Vetter asked the Commissioners for permission to put Bull Thistles back on the top ten noxious weeds in Mitchell County. The state removed that weed from the list last year.
Vetter said the weed is very invasive and the seeds can stay in the ground fifty years before germinating. The Commissioners approved putting Bull Thistle back on the County's top ten noxious weeds.
David Dohe, County Emergency Management Director, requested permission to purchase a "stand up" desk. Such a desk can be used in the traditional sit down method or it can be raised to allow user to do the work in a stand up fashion. The Commissioners, acknowledging this is becoming more and more common, authorized the expenditure of $1,700 for stand-up desk for Dohe.
Dohe requested a five-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel. No action was taken as a result of that closed session.
Superintendent of Public Works Marty Hernandez stopped by to report on the new motor grader. He said they gave it a thorough "going over" in the shop and then put it to work out in the County grading roads.
A $147,000 Neighbor Hood Revitalization Grant was approved for Carter Wessling for a residential remodel.
The Commissioner discussed attending the Kansas County Commission Association annual meeting which will be held on April 6-27.
Having addressed all the business items before them, the meeting was adjourned.
