MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS - Monday, February 3, 2025

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular weekly meeting at the Courthouse on Monday morning, February 3. Commissioners Tom Claussen, Cole Eberle and Mike Riemann were present as well as Heather Weston the County Clerk.
The first order of business was a visit by Tracey Barton and Larry Townsend. They represented the Kansas Natural Resource Coalition. This group was one of the leaders in resisting the high-level energy corridor. They also are advocation for endangered wildlife species, the Lesser Prairie Chicken. This bird, native to Kansas, is threatened with extinction.
Barton and Townsend asked if the Commissioners would like to commit Mitchell County to membership in their 32-county organization. The Commissioners said they would take this under advisement
Marty Hernandez, Superintendent of Public Works, made one of his regular appearances to update the Commissioners on the activities of the Road and Bridge department. His men are working diligently on the causeway guardrail project. The Road and Bridge crews are busy removing the old posts and cable guardrails on the Waconda Lake Causeway. Once the removal is complete the contractor can install the new posts and guardrail cable. The old material is the original from the late 1960s.
The Commissioners appointed Sarah Jensen to the Mitchell County Tourism Committee. She will replace Kim Ellenz whose term is coming to an end.
County Clerk Heather Weston submitted bids for a new copy machine to replace the well-worn current copier. The copier has provided a long service history but is in need or replacement. The Commissioners selected a Ricoh IMC 6010 machine. It is similar to the current copier. The bid of $11,200 included a service contract. One of their technicians lives in Glasco which should provide quick service if needed.
The Commissioners approved a Neighborhood Revitalization grant in the amount of $110,000 for Alan Curtis for a remodel of the property at 501 South Mill.
