Stephen Robert Wren, the son of William and Florine (Bryan) Wren, was born December 29, 1956 in Denver, Colorado. He passed in a tragic accident February 4, 2025 near Gainesville, Texas, at the age of 68.
Steve grew up in Denver and attended school there through junior high. He moved to Ionia, Kansas, to live with his beloved grandparents in 1971. He attended Jewell High School with the class of 1975.
In 1975, Steve married Diana Skucius and to this union, Justin the eldest son, was born.
On October 30, 1982, Steve married Rachelle Baxa and to this union three children were born, Aubrey, Christian and Jacob.
Bird dogs, waterfowl and upland bird hunting were a passion of Steve's from an early age and developed upon moving to Kansas. Steve loved training hunting dogs, beginning with his first black lab Pasha in Ionia. As years went by, he became interested in English Pointers. There were many Pointers that came to live at "Poverty Flats", his nickname for their home by Clifton. Later he found watching his dogs work successfully became more enjoyable for him than getting his limit of birds.
In high school Steve became involved in rodeo with his best friend Steve Taylor where he did some bullriding. He never lacked the courage to try something new or difficult. At one point while living in Belleville, Steve became interested in becoming a pilot. He made several long solo fights before returning to trucking.
Prior to driving a truck Steve worked carpentry, ran a gas station and was a farmhand. While living in Cuba he was introduced to driving trucks and would "help" his mentors as he learned the ropes. He drove for several different companies, hauling many different kinds of cargo from gas, livestock, swinging meat, produce, grain, dry goods to chemicals. Steve was not your typical driver. Besides keeping himself looking sharp, his truck needed to be as well. He took pride in his work and especially loved a clean, polished truck and trailer.
In 2007, Steve and his dear friend Bill Cyphers bought Dale Barnes Trucking. Their small truck line of three has grown over the years to include 15 drivers. Not only were the drivers considered friends and family but many other people that dealt with the company would become a part of the DBT family. Steve loved meeting people and developed countless friendships.
If you knew Steve you knew he loved to tell stories. You learned to pull up a chair, as he didn't tell a short story. Every detail was included whether it mattered or not.
As a husband, he was devoted and loving always offering support, kindness and laughter. Sunday afternoons, after the truck maintenance was finished, was dedicated to country Jeep rides with Rachelle. They didn't usually travel far. His favorite rides were seeing the country side and sunsets in the Cuba and Haddam areas.
Music was a pleasure Steve enjoyed. He loved the old country sound. He and Rachelle made it a point to listen to Herb's County Classics on Sunday evening. Once in a while he'd grab Rachelle and they would dance when the song was right and the mood struck.
As a father and grandfather, he showed his children and grandchildren the importance of love, respect and perseverance. Having his family around him was his greatest pleasure. The family cookouts on the patio or the holiday celebrations were full of fun, laughter and great food.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, William and Florine Wren; sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and Mike Graybill; grandparents, Leslie and Nellie Schrotenboer; great uncles, Leo Schrotenboer and Herman (Dutch) Schrotenboer.
