MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS – Monday, May 5, 2025

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their weekly meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning. All Commissioners were present as well as the County Clerk.
Alan Snyder, a citizen of Mitchell County, made an appearance at the meeting saying "I am here to discourage the Commissioners from buying the Becker property. If the Commissioners buy the property, it will be taken off the tax rolls. The County cannot afford the loss of revenue."
The Commissioners thanked Mr. Snyder for stopping by and expressing his views. They said a final decision on what course of action they might take is still quite some time off.
Bids have been received from Compliance One and Anytime Lab drug testing vendors. Currently Compliance One provides drug testing for the Mitchell County Road and Bridge crew. The Commissioners are adding the Sheriff's department and the Emergency Medical Service employees to the regular testing group. Commissioner Eberle suggested the Commissioners take a week and consider all the possibilities.
Commissioner Chairperson Tom Claussen said the D.O.T. was coming out to evaluate the two spur highways they are considering selling to Mitchell. In the road going into Simpson from Highway 24, the eastern half of the road is on Cloud County property. Claussen reported that Cloud County was not in favor of the sale.
David Dohe requested that Clyde Thrush be named as a transportation representative for the LEPC. The Commissioners approved Thrush for that position.
A cereal malt beverage license was approved for the Family Dollar store for off-premise consumption.
County Appraiser Melinda Latham presented her budget for the upcoming budget year. There is no increase in her salary. She requested the Commissioners sign a four-year contract. Latham said, "A contract protects the County and it protects the appraiser."
Morgan Bailey, the new Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce, stopped by to introduce herself to the Commissioners. She said she grew up in Norton, Kansas, so she is familiar with life in rural Kansas. She said with the Millapalooza not being held this year, she is investigating an affair on the Courthouse lawn. She said such an affair would include local talent such as cheerleaders, favorite foods, music and other down home activities.
Missy McGinnis and five of her staff were present and requested a 15 minute executive session. No decisions were made as a result of that closed session.
Jason Vetter was on hand to present his budget proposal for the Weed Department for the upcoming year.
Having addressed all the items on the proposed agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
