The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular weekly meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning, May 12. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present.
David Dohe presented the Commissioners with a resolution regarding the mitigation of natural hazards. The heart of the resolution was that many naturally occurring plants are, by their nature, hazardous. The resolution states that Mitchell County is aware of these naturally occurring hazards and will take the necessary steps to mitigate these hazards.
Nancy Rush, Glenda Rothchild and Renee Gengler, representing Heart Choices, were present to request that the Commissioners allow the sale of fireworks from July 1 until July 5, The proceeds from their firework stand are a major fundraiser for the program.
After considering all the pros and cons of the extension of firework sales by one day, the Commissioners voted unanimously to allow the one-day extension.
Marty Hernandez, Superintendent of the Road and Bridge Department, and Karm Cherek, Department Secretary, were present to discuss their proposed budget for the upcoming year. The Commissioners told them that they would review their proposed buget and make a final decision. Hernandez commented that the townships usually want a lot of money to do road improvement but they do not want to raise taxes.
The lawnmower used at the landfill is past worn out, according to Hernandez. He has located a good used lawnmower that would do the job at the landfill. It can be bought for $2,350. The Commissioners approved the purchase.
Courtney Murrow, County Health Nurse, requested a ten minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel. This session was increased by five minutes. When the regular session was called back to order Chairperson Tom Claussen announced that no decisions had been made as the result of the closed session.
Then a motion was made to increase the salary of Jenny Lundine by one dollar adjusting her salary from $16 per hour to $17 per hour.
When asked if the measles outbreak might get to Mitchell County, Murrow replied, "Probably. Measles is a very contagious disease and with our mobile society, it is likely to spread well beyond southwest Kansas."
Tony Perez, Mitchell County Sheriff, requested a ten-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel. After the executive session motion was made to increase the pay for Keyia Crouch from $16 per hour to $17 per hour.
Having discussed all the items on the published agenda the meeting was adjourned.
