Larry K. Behrends was born on October 20, 1940, in Beloit, Kansas, to Kenneth and Velda Behrends of Randall, Kansas. He died Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas, at the age of 84.
Larry grew up with his parents and older sister Cheryl on a farm east of Randall. Larry attended Hillgrove Country School until the fifth grade, often riding the family pony with his sister to school. Growing up, Larry helped his parents with their farm work and animals. Larry's hands-on work with livestock sparked an interest, which led him to operate his own farming and milking business as an adult. During his younger years, Larry was also active in 4-H, where he raised and showed calves. In his sixth-grade year, Larry began attending Randall Grade School.
During his high school years, Larry was a good athlete, lettering in football, basketball and track. He graduated from Randall Rural High School in 1958 and then attended Fort Hays State, majoring in Business.
On December 30, 1962, Larry married Joanne Abram, and they made their home on a farm east of Randall. Shortly after, three children were added to the family: Jana, Joey and Janelle.
Larry worked hard to support his family. In addition to operating his own farm for many years, Larry held jobs at the Solomon Valley Feedlot in Beloit, the Randall Farmers Coop, and was a substitute bus driver.
In 1985 Larry and Joanne moved to Jewell, Kansas. He enjoyed watching sports on television and playing a game of cribbage each night after dinner with Joanne. After retirement, Larry and Joanne moved to Beloit to live closer to their family. Larry enjoyed attending his grandchildren's athletic events in Beloit. He was proud of each of them and equally proud of his great-grandchildren in later years.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Joanne. He is survived by daughter, Jana Black and husband Donny of Kansas City, Missouri; son, Joey Behrends and wife Stacy of Beloit; daughter, Janelle Budke and husband Raymond of Beloit; his grandchildren, Austin Budke and wife Bailey, Brady Budke, Remi Clark and husband Ty, Colin Budke, Carly Budke and Konnor Penning, Reid Behrends and Enyli Alvarado; great-grandchildren, Asa and Albie Budke and Truette Clark; and sister, Cheryl Overman.
Funeral services will be at 1 PM Monday, January 13, at the Beloit First Christian Church followed by burial at the Randall Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 PM to 7 PM, with family present from 5 PM to 6 PM Sunday, January 12, at the Roberts Family Funeral Home.
Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or the Beloit Senior Center.
Roberts Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
