H&R Block Ribbon Cutting
Come to the Ribbon Cutting on Monday, November 15th at 3:00 pm to meet the new owners of the H & R Block business at 113 N. Mill. Venette and Robert Davis have purchased the franchise from Shirley McDonald, who will remain a part of the tax preparation and bookkeeping services.
Robert has been an adjunct professor at Kansas State University teaching Estate Planning and Personal Income Taxation. Additionally, Robert has a financial planning practice that he will continue in Beloit. Venette previously was Senior Vice President at Security Benefit in roles ranging from Marketing, Customer Management and Human Resources.
Under management by the Davis', the Block office will continue to offer year round tax preparation and planning services. Additionally, they plan to expand the current bookkeeping and payroll services.
Shirley has been working at H & R Block for over 25 years. She and her husband, Ronald, are transitioning to Ellis to be near grandchildren.
The Davis' relocated from Topeka, Kansas to be near Venette's parent's, Diane and Verlin Kolman. They are joined by their three children, Aspen (Junior), Brooke (7th Grade) and Austin (6th Grade).
Convention & Tourism Grant Awards
The Mitchell County Convention & Tourism Committee issued $2,000 in grant money to three groups. They approved $500 for the R.J. McClintock Family Country Christmas Concert scheduled for Saturday, November 27th.
They also approved a grant for $500 for the Spirit of the Season, Relay 4 Life Homes Tour scheduled for December 11th & 12th.
The Committee also granted $1,000 to the Mitchell County Historical Society for a brochure to promote the development of the Farmer's Memorial which will be located on the Gable Farm property near the junction of Highways 24 & 14.
The Convention & Tourism Committee is also working on a television commercial that will begin airing later this month to promote hunting in Mitchell County.
Veterans Day Parade
Organizers are working on plans for the annual Veterans Day Parade in Beloit. The event will be November 11th beginning at 11:00 a.m. The parade line-up will begin at 5th & Mill Streets. The theme for the parade this year is "Let Freedom Ring".
Following the parade there will be a free meal at the VFW Hall. For more information on the parade contact Tom Maxwell at 738-7502.
1-100 Final Week for Ticket Sales
This is the final week to purchase tickets for the Chamber's 1-100 Gala event. One of the attendees will be on the receiving end of a $5,000 grand prize! Of that amount $2,500 will be divided as a donation between the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the North Central Kansas Down Syndrome Society donated in the winners' name. The remaining $2,500 cash will go directly to the winner.
Only 100 participant meal tickets will be sold for the event for a donation of $100 each. The tickets include your selection of a prime rib, chicken or vegetarian meal, bar and a number of prize packages that will be given away every 15 minutes. There will also be a silent auction with valuable items donated by area businesses.
The event will be held November 13th at the VFW in Beloit. Entry will be with a ticket only. For more information contact the Chamber office at 738-2717.

Toys for Tots Run
The 3rd Annual Steve Carlton Memorial Toys for Tots Run will be Saturday, November 20th. The parade will begin at 11 AM with participants gathering at the Alco Parking lot at 10:30 a.m. Entry into the parade will include the donation of one new unwrapped toy.
In addition to the parade there will be a chili soup feed and auction beginning at noon at the Beloit Municipal Building. Santa will be there too.
Toys and cash donations may be dropped off at Guaranty State Bank in Beloit, Critters in Mankato or Central National Bank in Tipton. Cash donations can also be mailed to Toys for Tots in care of Solomon Valley Eagle Riders at P.O. Box 405 in Beloit.
The annual Toys for Tots Run is sponsored by Solomon Valley Eagle Riders in cooperation with the Beloit Ministerial Association and Jewell County Angel Trees.
Veterans Day Office Closings
Many local offices will be closed on Thursday, November 11th in observance of Veterans Day. The City of Beloit offices, Mitchell County Courthouse, Post Office and area banks will be closed. Banks that will be closed include Farmers & Merchants in Cawker City; Central National Bank in Tipton; Glen Elder and Beloit; First National Bank in Beloit; Guaranty State Bank & Trust in Beloit and TriCentury Bank in Simpson.
The Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce office will also be closed.
