Chester Bennett "Chet" Chopp, the son of Frank H. Chopp and Gertrude (Morgan) Chopp, was born February 9, 1926 in rural Narka, Kansas, and passed away on September 26, 2021 at the Belleville Health Care Center, Belleville, Kansas, at the age of 95 years, 7 months, 17 days.
Chet grew up in rural Narka and attended the local public schools. He served with the U. S. Army during W. W. II as a Technician Fifth Grade with the 2nd Division 9th Infantry, serving overseas in France and Germany. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to the family farm south of Narka. Chet was a farmer and stockman most of his life. He also drove a school bus for many years.
On February 17, 1952, he was united in marriage to Norma Danielson and to this union was born, Dennis, Ronald, and Brian. The couple made their home in rural Republic County for many years, moving to Cuba, Kansas, in 2002 when Chet retired from farming.
He was a lifetime member and Past Commander of the Cuba American Legion Post #345 and also a member of the Clyde VFW. He served on the National Cemetery Board and the Farmington Township Board for several years.
Chet was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Brian; brother, Delbert (Marion) Chopp; and brother-in-law, Marvin Danielson.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Chopp, of Cuba, Kansas; two sons, Dennis (Brenda) Chopp of Belleville, Kansas, and Ronald (Dianna) Chopp of Narka, Kansas; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Rhonda (Jeff) Underhill and their children, Jeffrey and Bennett, Janet (Brandon) Searls, Christina (Chris) Engelhardt and their children Anna and Willow; sister-in-law, Carol Danielson of Aurora, Colorado; nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Cremation was selected and memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 2, 2021 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home with Pastor Phil Goombi officiating.
Inurnment will follow at the National Cemetery, rural Narka, Kansas.
Military graveside will be conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard and the Cuba American Legion Post #345.
A luncheon will be served following the graveside services at the Cuba American Legion Post #345, Cuba, Kansas.
Friends may sign the register book from 1 PM until 6 PM on Friday, October 1, at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Cuba American Legion or the Cuba Presbyterian Church.
