MITCHELL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS – Monday, December 19, 2022

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular weekly meeting at the Courthouse Monday morning, December 19th. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present for the meeting.
A Neighborhood Revitalization Grant was approved for Dennis Pahls in the amount of $55,000 for a mobile home in Cawker City.
Emily Benedick was present and announced she had received a Seed Grant for $49,125. The money may be applied for by local childcare providers to support the care efforts of Mitchell County children.
Eric Hamel, Director of Emergency Medical Services, gave his ambulance activity report for the month of November to the Commissioners.
The Ambulance Service conducted 49 runs in the month of November. Thirty-five runs were made to the City of Beloit, nine to Cawker City, three to Glen Elder, and one each to Hunter and Hays. The busiest time period was from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with six runs during that time. The next busiest time was the 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. time slot with five runs. The 12 noon to 1 p.m., 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. time periods recorded four runs each. Wednesday was the busiest with 15 runs that day followed by Thursday with nine runs. The average time from when a call came in until an ambulance left the barn was 54 seconds. The age groups of 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 to 89 year olds recorded ten runs each.
Well-known Mitchell County citizen, Charlie Mears, appeared to discuss the theft of 911 road signs from Mitchell County roads. Mears said that these road signs direct emergency personnel to locations in need of vital services. The lack of road signs could drastically delay the delivery of emergency services.
The Commissioners and Mears discussed several possible responses to the situation and committed to attempt a solution to this troublesome problem.
The remainder of the meeting was devoted to meetings with department heads in executive session. On this list of department heads for Monday's meeting were Marty Hernandez, Superintendent of Public Works; David Dohe, Emergency Management; Becky Snook, Dispatch; Tony Perez, County Sheriff; and Yvonne Melton, Treasurer.
Having addressed all the items on the agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
