Derek Budke, a cherished soul known for his infectious smile and unwavering spirit, passed away on August 15, 2026, after a courageous battle with a body that stopped working. Born on May 4, 1970, in Beloit, Kansas, Derek was the beloved son of Sylvia and the late Richard Budke.
Derek's life was a testament to humility, kindness, and familial devotion. He was a proud alumnus of St. John's Catholic High School, graduating in 1989, and furthered his education at North Central Kansas Technical College. His career spanned over a decade at Carrico Implement in Beloit, Kansas, where he worked in various roles, including as an assembler, equipment cleaner, and receptionist. Derek was known for his work ethic and dedication, traits that endeared him to colleagues and friends alike.
A devoted father, Derek is survived by his son Landon and daughter-in-law Ally, who were the light of his life. His legacy of love and laughter continues through them. Derek is also survived by his loving mother Sylvia; his brothers Brent (Kim), Jason (Jama), Jeremy (LaShae), and Jonathan (Christine); and his sisters Licia (Shaye) and Sheila (Chad) along with a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving and caring Resident Care Center family.
Derek had a love for hunting and trapping in his younger years, mostly because he got to enjoy these activities with his brothers. He was also an avid sports fan, with a particular love for Kansas State University and the Kansas City Chiefs making sure he had all of their upcoming games marked on his room calendar.
Derek was a man of faith and an active member of St. John's Catholic Church for as long as his health permitted. Even when he could no longer attend in person, he found peace in receiving communion at Resident Care Center.
Derek's kind heart left a lasting impact on everyone he met. He was known for his honesty, often sharing his thoughts candidly, and always with a sense of humor. He was particularly fond of Mountain Dew, Pepsi and chocolate malts from Dairy Queen.
In honor of Derek, a visitation will be held at Roberts Family Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 18th from 1:00 - 6:00 followed by a Rosary at 6:00 PM. Derek's funeral will be Wednesday, August 19th at 10:00 AM at St John's Catholic Church. The family kindly requests that those wishing to honor Derek's memory consider donating to St. John's Catholic Church or Resident Care Center at Mitchell County Hospital.
Though Derek's physical presence will be deeply missed, his spirit, warmth, and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
