Mitchell County Commissioners

Monday, July 13, 2015

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners held their weekly business meeting Monday, July13, 2015. All three Commissioners were present as well as the County Clerk. They were faced with a light agenda of items which they dispensed with in a businesslike fashion.

The first order of business was to present Larry Heidrick with a certificate honoring his fifty years of service to the Mitchell County Rural Fire Department. Heidrick has held virtually every role with the Department over the past fifty years. Most at least twice and many several times. Heidrick said he was a little nervous when one of the ice cream cakes he received said, “For your first 50 years.” The Commissioners declared Monday, July 13, 2015 to be “Larry Heidrick Day.”

The Commissioners reviewed one more time the agreement with the bureau of interior for the Cawker City Causeway project. The county’s share of the project cost is $181,000. Should costs be expected to go over that amount, Mitchell County will need to be consulted and they must give permission first.

Chairperson Tom Claussen announced there will be a Fire Chiefs meeting this coming Thursday at the Fire Station. Claussen also told his fellow Commissioner that a Red Cross Blood Drive would be conducted this Friday from 11:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Emergency Medical Services Director Kelly Hawk submitted his monthly report for the Ambulance Service. He reported that collections of past due accounts is improving considerably with the Delissa Billing service.

On this date a year ago, the EMS had conducted 266 runs. On the same date this year they have logged 326 runs. For the month of June the EMS logged fifty runs. The busiest time of the day was 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Saturday was the most active day.

Stan Deneke, Noxious Weed Director, requested permission to attempt to sell the old spray rig truck. A new truck was purchased a few months ago and it is performing well and appears to be reliable and well able to get the job done. Deneke said he wanted to make sure the new truck was equal to the job before taking action to sell the old truck. Deneke says he is comfortable selling the old truck

Deneke was given permission to advertise that the old truck is available to be purchased in a sealed bid process. The Commissioners hoped that the truck could be advertised and that the sealed bids could be opened in mid-August.

Having successfully cleared all the items on the agenda, the Commissioners adjourned the meeting.
