THURSDAY JULY 7 BELOIT LEGION BASEBALL TEAM SPLITS WITH SALINA HAWKS

Beloit Legion Baseball- July 7, 2016

On a night of wouldas, couldas, and shouldas both baseball teams playing in Salina last night exposed cracks in their armour and lost the potential for sweeping the other. It ended up being a split last night for each club at Matson Park. Salina won the first game 7-5, and Beloit took the second game 8-7.

In game one Beloit held a 3-1 lead and was playing very well behind their ace pitcher Dakota Shurts. In the 4th and 5th innings things came unraveled for Beloit pitching as Salina scored 5 times in the two innings aided by 6 base on balls and two hit by pitch batters. Shurts pitches 3 2/3 allowing 5 runs on 6 hits, walks 2, and strikes out 1. He is now 5-2 on the season. Paxton Harris pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief giving up 2 runs, yielding no hits, but walks 5 while striking out 2. Braydon Conn, Paxton Harris, and Jarod Mosher, and Noah Marozas each went 1-3 at the plate.

In game two- Salina rallied late and took a 7-6 lead going into the final inning. They needed just the three outs to record the win and keep in tact a lengthy 14 game winning streak for themselves. After getting the first two Beloit batters out and needing just the final out Salina looked poised to accomplish just that- the sweep, but hold on Luke Hesting draws the two out walk and Michael Peters doubles to the deep gap in left center field and Hesting scores from first base, and just like that the game was tied. Noah Marozas stepped next up doubled behind Peters to right and Peters scores giving Beloit the 8-7 lead. Caden Emott pitching in relief of Luke Hesting shuts down Salina in their home half of the 7th and Beloit wins in dramatic comeback fashion 8-7. Michael Peters was 2-5 with 2 doubles, Noah Marozas was 2-5 with two doubles, and Paxton Harris turns in a nice performance at the plate going 2-2 with two walks. Luke Hesting gets the no decision on the mound. Hesting pitches 5 innings giving up 6 runs on 6 hits, walks 2, and strikes out 6. Caden Emott gets the win in relief pitching 2 innings allowing 1 run on no hits, walks 1, and strikes out 1.

Beloit’s record now stands at 13-9. Beloit will play their final regular season games at home next week on Wednesday against Smith Center. Beloit will play in the post season zone tournament on July 18, 19, 20 in Larned. Participating in the zone tournament will be Larned, Russell, Ellis, Wakeeney, Lincoln Tri County, Concordia, and Beloit.
